چکیده

The mass assembly is believed to be the dominant process of early galaxy formation. This mechanism of galaxy building can proceed either by repeated major mergers with other systems, or by means of accretion of matter from the surrounding regions.

The 48-base-long primordial building block of immunoglobulin light-chain variable regions is complementary to the primordial building block of heavy-chain variable regions.

The ancestral gene for immunoglobulin light-chain variable regions (Ig VLs) of the kappa as well as the lambda class apparently arose from about 12 tandem repeats of the 48-base-long primordial building block sequence TCT-TGC-GCA-GTA-AGT-CCA-CTC-CAG-GTC-ATA-TCC-AGT-CAG-GCT-GCT-GAA. Even today, amino acid residues 67 to 82 of each Ig V kappa L are still specified by a direct descendant in toto o...

The Stromlo Missing Satellites Survey

According to cosmological theory, density fluctuations of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) form the first structures in the Universe. The gravitational potential wells of these dark matter halos suck in primordial gas and provide the seeds for the formation of stars via energy dissipation and cooling, a billion years after the Big Bang. The observational Universe today is filled with these galaxies, the ...

Understanding dwarf galaxies as galactic building blocks

This is a summary of a general discussion held during the third EuroConference on galaxy evolution. Various observational features of the stellar populations in present–day dwarf galaxies were presented to introduce the discussion on the possibility that these systems be the main building blocks of spiral and elliptical galaxies. Many people in the audience turned out to think that the inconsis...

Spiral Galaxies as Chiral Objects?

Spiral galaxies show axial symmetry and an intrinsic 2D-chirality. Environmental effects can influence the chirality of originally isolated stellar systems and a progressive loss of chirality can be recognised in the Hubble sequence. We point out a preferential modality for genetic galaxies as in microscopic systems like aminoacids, sugars or neutrinos. This feature could be the remnant of a pr...

Mixing of Primordial Gas in Lyman Break Galaxies

Motivated by an interpretation of z ∼ 3 objects by Jimenez and Haiman (2006), we examine processes that control the fraction of primordial (Z = 0) gas, and so primordial stars, in high-SFR Lyman break galaxies. A primordial fraction different from 1 or 0 requires microscopic diffusion catalyzed by a velocity field with timescale comparable to the duration of star formation. The only process we ...
